School Family Education (SFE) was introduced in April 2008 and the Family Life Centre was setup at the school foyer area. This programme is funded by Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) with the support of a Service Provide, Centre for Advancement of Family Education Pte Ltd (C.A.F.E.).

SFE adopts a holistic family learning model – equipping parents with effective parenting skills and training them to be parent facilitators, helping the school staff to enhance their family life, and providing pupils with life skills training.

 Parent Facilitator Training

Parent Facilitator Training, or PFT, is opened to all PSG members. If you are keen on joining the PFT but is not yet a PSG member, that’s easy enough. The first step towards PFT would be to join PSG as a member.

Module 1 of PFT covers the importance of family life education, spanning a wide area that includes the basics and tools of effective facilitation, individual and family life cycle, development and challenges of raising tweenies and adolescence as well as how marriage affects parenting.

To have a better understanding of how PFT has changed the perspective and outlook of some parents, check out our “Parent Facilitators’ Say” section.

There are, however, some criteria that parents have to fulfil before and after attending PFT:

1) In order to qualify for the MCYS subsidy for the course, parents need to be a member of the school’s PSG to join PFT.

2) Shortlisted parents will have to go through a round of interview with the school.

3) Upon completing the PFT course (which is about 40 hours), parents are obligated to render 9 hours of facilitation services to the school within one year of course completion.

Family Tips

1)  Start a hobby together as a family, like doing jigsaw puzzles or growing a small herb garden. 

2) Take a walk as a family on Sunday.

3) Send your child to school and chat along the way.

4) Take the new Circle Line MRT as a family outing and get off at various stops to explore the surroundings.

5) Get everyone involved in the cooking and preparations and cooking of a family meal.

6) Plan a local holiday together and embark on exploring visit places of interest in Singapore as a family.

7) Enjoy a relaxing day building sand castles on the beach with your family.

8 ) Say thank you to everyone in the family.

9) Set aside time once a week to play a sport together.

10) Make a list of your family’s favourite hawker dishes and one dish a week with your family at a highly recommended stall.

SFE is coming to TWO !!

Since April 2008, School Family Education (SFE) has conducted numerous workshops and activities. Many of our parents, staff and pupils had benefited from the fun-enriching sessions organized by SFE, and had found that family life had improved.

They feedback that the parenting talks were useful and hope to attend such interactions more often.
The In-Line Skating held last November had an overwhelming response from the parents and pupils. All of them had enjoyed themselves and look forward to have it again this year.

The Cyber Wellness Talk scheduled on 28/02/09 (Saturday) had attracted a big crowd. Through the session, parents are now more aware of the challenges in the Cyber World, how to help their children and better monitor the cyber activities of their children.

Moving ahead, SFE plan to organize more “Coffee Talks” for parents to share their life experiences in parenting.
