Upcoming Workshop

SFE Comes To Nan Chiau Primary School

School Family Education (SFE) was introduced in April 2008 and the Family Life Centre was setup at the school foyer area. This programme is funded by Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) with the support of a Service Provide, Centre for Advancement of Family Education Pte Ltd (C.A.F.E.).

SFE adopts a holistic family learning model – equipping parents with effective parenting skills and training them to be parent facilitators, helping the school staff to enhance their family life, and providing pupils with life skills training.

The parent-child relationship has much impact on the child’s academic achievements and positive attitude / behaviour, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic / racial background or parents’ education level.

SFE has been well received by parents and participating schools. Since 2002, more than 201 schools have joined the SFE family and more than 1.5 million people have benefited from the life-enriching programmes under SFE.

What is Parent Facilitator?

Parent Facilitators are trained members of the Parent Support Group (PSG) who not only assist in facilitating SFE workshops, but are also tasked with reaching out to parents with the aim of increasing parent involvement and raising awareness in school family education.

 Parent Facilitator Training

Parent Facilitator Training, or PFT, is opened to all PSG members. If you are keen on joining the PFT but is not yet a PSG member, that’s easy enough. The first step towards PFT would be to join PSG as a member.

Module 1 of PFT covers the importance of family life education, spanning a wide area that includes the basics and tools of effective facilitation, individual and family life cycle, development and challenges of raising tweenies and adolescence as well as how marriage affects parenting.

To have a better understanding of how PFT has changed the perspective and outlook of some parents, check out our “Parent Facilitators’ Say” section.

There are, however, some criteria that parents have to fulfil before and after attending PFT:

1) In order to qualify for the MCYS subsidy for the course, parents need to be a member of the school’s PSG to join PFT.

2) Shortlisted parents will have to go through a round of interview with the school.

3) Upon completing the PFT course (which is about 40 hours), parents are obligated to render 9 hours of facilitation services to the school within one year of course completion.

To find out more about the Parent Facilitator Training, please contact our SFE Coordinator, Ms Josey Koh or email her at sfe.ncps@gmail.com .

Parent Facilitators’ Say

Hear What Our Parent Facilitators

Have To Say…

“It is definitely not easy to be a working mum in this 21st century.  This workshop has not only helped me to improve my family life, it has also helped me in my job.  100% participation and commitment in this workshop has definitely benefitted me.  I would strongly encourage parents to be part of the PSG team to enjoy benefits like us.”

   - Lilian Tan, Parent of Primary 6 & 4 pupils (2010)

“This training had enhance my understanding of my children’s characteristics.  With this useful parenting skill, it helps me to communicate with them better.  My relationship with my spouse has also improved with a more open and honest two-way communication.  I strongly encourage parents to attend family life centre activities as you will gain beneficial parenting skills.”

  - Diana Ong, Parent of Primary 1 pupils (2010)

“I never realised how communiction can be so important when it comes to children.  Although I do listen to my boys, I think I am the one who do most of the talking, asking them to do this and that.  After going through Module 1, I try to listen to my sons and ask for their ideas and opinions, which has been very good.

What I like about this class is that I have met so many mummies from different school.  We share what has happened during the week or what we are going through at that point with our kids.”

- Nimali, Parent of Primary 1 pupils (2010)

“This has been a very enriching course covering all aspects of parenting from marriage to teenagers.  What is specially helpful is the experts such as the psychologist and counsellor from the various fields who have come and share their knowledge with us.”

- Yvonne Ang, Parent of Primary 1 pupils (2010)

“The fear and trepidation of being an incompetent or “not good enough” parent are always there.  The course made me realized that I am not alone.  Not only did it endorse what I believe in, it also provides me with opportunities to learn, share and tap into the experiences of the many parents who are attending the same course.  It gives me great fulfilment knowing that the skill sets picked up will go a long way in making me a better person when handling my spouse, children and people that I come into contact daily.

The bonus of attending this course, is that it comes with the parent networking component as well.  Not only do I get to network with parents from other schools, it also enables me to network and bond with parents from our school, building friendships and establishing support which would have been difficult otherwise, more so for a fulltime working mum.”

 - Mrs Ow, Parent of P1 and P3 Pupils (2009)

“Guilt, the feeling of culpability is a very strong emotion capable of bringing down the strongest man, or woman as the case may be.  As a working mom struggling to strike a balance between career and family, guilt lingers like one’s shadow, creeping to the forefront whenever the balance is not met. The Parent Facilitator course has helped me tremendously in coming to terms with life’s many challenges.  This course not only helps me in facilitating my seven year-old but also adds a touch of new perspectives to my daily life and interaction with loved ones, colleagues, and acquaintances…  thumbs up and a must do for all…”

 - Judy, Parent of P1 Pupil (2009)

“ I never realize that I’m not the only one facing issues with my two girls…especially the elder one! I really appreciate the SFE coordinator as well as the principal for giving me this opportunity to attend this course. Beside skills & knowledge gain, the most valuable experiences or information gained is through the games played and exchange of information between parents. To me, I feel it really helps – not only in areas of kids, it offers me another perspective of looking at things which helps in many areas; careers, marriage life….”

                                                                                                             - ST, Parent of P1 & P3 Pupils (2009)

“Through the course, I learnt a number of different skills and collected information and knowledge, experiences from other parents.  As parents, we have an enormous responsibility to actively teach & train our children. You are guaranteed to learn more about your children, improve your relationship with them and be able to teach more effectively!”

          - Joyce, Parent of P1 & P4 Pupils (2009)

“I have learnt that family bonding is very important as it improves communication skills between my spouse and children.  Through the training, I have met up wth many parents.  We shared Parenting Tips and we interacted very often.  I have also learnt to accept the reality that my son has learning difficulties.  With proper guidance, our son is now attending a school specialised in Autisim.

Many thanks to SFE for helping me to improve my family life.  I strongly encourage all parents to visit the Family Life Centre more often as the books are very beneficial!  Enjoy reading!”

 - Mrs Lim, Parent of P4 Pupil (2009)

“From the training, I came to know more about the different set of principles in handling tweenies and teenagers.  Every opportunity of getting together with my children is a teaching moment – playing the board games, watching TV programmes, etc.  The problems we face everyday with our family are not uncommon.  They happen to other parents and couples too…”

- Mrs Ang, Parent of P5 Pupil (2009)

“I am very glad to have completed the Module One of the Parent Facilitator Training.  It has been an enriching one and I have learnt parenting tips from other parents.  The Parenting Skills helped me in my everyday life.  My relationship with my spouse and children has improved and that makes me a happier wife and mother now.  I strongly encourage all parents to attend this training as it definitely benefits you!”

- Mrs Ong, Parent of P3 Pupil (2009)

SFE is coming to TWO !!

Since April 2008, School Family Education (SFE) has conducted numerous workshops and activities. Many of our parents, staff and pupils had benefited from the fun-enriching sessions organized by SFE, and had found that family life had improved.

They feedback that the parenting talks were useful and hope to attend such interactions more often.
The In-Line Skating held last November had an overwhelming response from the parents and pupils. All of them had enjoyed themselves and look forward to have it again this year.

The Cyber Wellness Talk scheduled on 28/02/09 (Saturday) had attracted a big crowd. Through the session, parents are now more aware of the challenges in the Cyber World, how to help their children and better monitor the cyber activities of their children.

Moving ahead, SFE plan to organize more “Coffee Talks” for parents to share their life experiences in parenting.
